As with many iconic creatives, the work of Daniel Arsham possesses an intangible allure. If you are immersed in urban culture, you could probably identify one of his pieces at first glance. Yet while his brand of decay-centric deconstructed futurism is easily distinguishable, it manages to consistently retain its allure across the myriad themes and subjects to which it is applied.
In recent years, Arsham’s infatuation with exotic sports cars has become increasingly apparent. Arguably one of his most impressive works to date, Arsham’s take on a replica 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder accompanied a deconstructed and reassembled 1981 DMC DeLorean in his “3018” exhibit at Galorie Perrotin in New York, and he reimagined a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo (930) as a decayed and calcified shell of its former self – both in actual size, and as a 12.2 inch collectible model – as part of his ongoing “Future Relic Series”.
Combining elements of Arsham’s interests in science fiction, automobiles, failed technology and cinema, his latest sculpture edition, “ERODED DELOREAN”, is a collectible model that showcases his interpretation of a sports car that aligned with pop culture when prominently featured in the “Back to the Future” film trilogy. Based on his lifescale sculpture of the DMC DeLorean that appeared at “3018”, the collectible model is the most complex edition created thus far, according to Arsham. At 31 cm in length and a weight of 2.8 kg, it includes signature gull-wing doors that open, Arsham Studio designed housing with die-cut foam, sealing label and a pair of white handling gloves, each ERODED DELOREAN will also include an Arsham Editions holographic label verifying its edition number and authenticity, as only 500 pieces will be released via danielarsham.com on June 18 at 9:00 a.m. PST.
