Although initially known for serving as Kanye West’s tour manager, creating wildly popular snapback caps with snakeskin bills and zipper-pocketed basketball shorts under his Just Don brand and launching conceptual retail boutique RSVP Gallery alongside Virgil Abloh, Don C. has quietly become regarded as one of the leading collaborators in footwear. His co-branded releases with Converse, Jordan and Nike are considered “instant classics” by many purveyors of streetwear and curators of pop culture. Generally speaking, his approach has entailed applying unique colors, materials and / or design patterns to preexisting models that were synonymous with inner-city life during the 1990’s in Chicago.
2021 marks the introduction of the Just Don “Courtside Hi”, the brand’s first in-line sneaker. “inspired in Chicago” by Michael Jordan (“the greatest to ever do it”, according to Don C.) and by Jordan’s 1992 Ferrari Testarossa 512TR – a car that appeared prominently throughout the 2020 Netflix documentary “The Last Dance” – the Courtside Hi mixes classic design cues with luxury accents and premium materials. For example, the Testarossa 512TR’s carefully stitched bucket seat design was reinterpreted on the sneaker’s upper heel, while the car’s iconic grated taillight grill closely resembles the details of the sneaker’s lower heel. Made in Italy, the Courtside Hi features an upper crafted from high quality leather, a neoprene tongue and a sturdy midsole reminiscent of the Testarossa 512TR’s infamous exterior door silhouette. Available in Black / Cream and in White/ Teal”, the result is a shoe with the flexibility to stand out in United Center floor seats or front row at Paris Fashion Week. The development of his own shoe is an organic and logical segue for Don C. that seemingly opens the door to potential celebrity or athlete endorsements, as well as to future Just Don sneaker collaborations with emerging and established brands.
